Realityworks Star Newsletter

Where on earth have you been? We’ve missed you!

No wait—we’re the ones who went away and didn’t write or call. Sorry ‘bout that . . .

The newsletter staff has been occupied with some exciting new Realityworks projects and we’ve finally found time to tell you about them. Online education! CEU credits! Trade-in offer! Personal finance education software! Business education simulations! Baby packages for colleges and vocational schools! Whew! That’s a lot of exclamation marks.

We’ve also had a few people under the weather. We’re hoping you and your families are staying well during this extraordinarily challenging cold and flu season.

Not to worry, though. We’re back and we’ve thoroughly sanitized this publication. No bugs here! You may need to pop a vitamin to keep up with us, and do stay hydrated so you can make it to the end of this newsletter, but the only virus we plan to spread is joy.

And just make sure you feel good, we’re going to introduce you to a Texas volunteer who has made an extraordinary commitment to help young people with gifts of both money and time. If you aren’t inspired to do something nice for somebody after reading about Sharon Scott, you may need antibiotics.

Thanks for looking in. Stay healthy and keep doing that thing you do!

School volunteer puts time, money and heart into preventing teen pregnancies in Texas.Sharon Scott

Realityworks customer Sharon Scott was named Volunteer of the Year by the Harrison Independent School District in Houston Texas, in part for her work using RealCare Babies.

“The products fit very well into my mission to help prevent teen pregnancy,” said Sharon.

She and her husband, Ed, started out mentoring pregnant teens at Westside High School because they wanted to provide support to teen parents and help them become loving, positive and productive citizens despite the odds against them. Sharon was then inspired to educate students on the emotional, social and financial aspects of having children at such a young age, as a way to prevent teenage pregnancies.

“These teens mean so very much to me,” said Sharon. “It hurts my heart to see what little value they, unknowingly, place upon their lives. We, with the financial support of so many, drop the seeds of success and love into the lives of teens; and, let God do the rest.”

Sharon teaches a six-week program in Westside Health classes, and for one weekend her students take home RealCare Baby. She also happens to have purchased the infant simulators for the school with funds from The Marvin and Juanita Smith Learning Centers of Excellence fund. The Smiths were Sharon’s parents, former pastors who ministered to teens for 40 years in southern California.

“Their passion was to motivate children, to help them do well in school and to learn to give back. They were great role models.”

Sharon has certainly carried on her parents’ legacy in her work at Westside High School. We are proud to work with Sharon, and honored that she and Ed would choose our products as part of their important mission. Congratulations, Sharon!

Product Support Tip: Our infant care schedules are based on real infants!

RealCare Baby is science-based. This means our simulators and their care schedules are based on the real life needs of real “live” babies! Our research included documentation provided to us by parents caring for their infants in a 24-hour period (babies ranged in age of 8 days old to 82 days old and were a mix of bottle-fed and breast-fed). From all of the participants we selected a batch of 15 schedules to best represent the unpredictable needs of a Baby and provide a unique experience for each student.

The care schedules are categorized as “easy,” “medium” and “hard.” You may also mix things up. Select a combination of schedules to keep each caregiver on the alert! Want to make your job really easy? Choose “random” and let the computer assign them.

You’ll find these options in Control Center software under Schedule Order and Schedule Helper.

Download and print your own copy of the Infant Care Schedule Table for RealCare Baby here. It will not tell you the specific care event, time, or duration, but the colored bars will indicate how much time Baby requires each hour of the day.

Product Support hours: Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. Call 800.830.1416 or email productsupport@realityworks.com or refer to the list of Frequently Asked Questions.

GRANT NOTICE : AmeriCorps State, National and Indian Tribes Planning Grants

Purpose
: AmeriCorps helps thousands of national community nonprofits, faith-based groups, schools and local agencies meet local needs in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security and other critical areas. Funds generally are awarded to organizations to recruit, train and manage AmeriCorps members addressing unmet community needs. Roughly three-quarters of all grants go to governor-appointed state service commissions, which award sub grants to nonprofits in their states. The remainder of the funding goes to national organizations operating in more than one state.

INSIDER’S TIP: Every nonprofit should keep informed about the AmeriCorps process in its state. The program can provide much needed assistance for its efforts. Nonprofits that are part of a larger state or national effort should know what's going on at headquarters, too.

AmeriCorps State and National Grants (Deadline: January 26)
Subject to the availability of appropriations for fiscal year 2010, the Corporation announces the anticipated availability of approximately $363 million to award new, re-competing, and continuation AmeriCorps State and National grants. The grant categories are: State Commission and National Competitive including Professional Corps and Fixed-Amount Grants; State and National EAP; States and Territories without Commissions; and Indian Tribes. In the FY 2010 competition, the Corporation's funding priorities are projects that address compelling, unmet needs in one or a combination of the following five national service priority areas which are described more fully in the Notice of Funding Opportunity.

  • Education
  • Clean Energy/
    Environment
  • Healthy Futures
  • Veterans
  • Opportunity

The total funding available for these grants will be set by Congress through the appropriations process now underway. If the President's fiscal year 2010 budget request is fully funded, the agency anticipates approximately $363 million to be available for new, recompeting, and continuation grants in all of the AmeriCorps State and National grant categories. Applications to the Corporation are due January 26, 2010, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and successful applicants will be notified in early June 2010.

November Star Trivia

Thankyoubaby, thankyouverymuch...yes, November is all about giving thanks, and we are truly thankful—for customers like you, for pilgrim's feet and Elvis Presley, but what are we all really thinking about? Turkey! Turkey with gravy, turkey with cranberries, turkey with peanut butter and bananas (hey, whatever floats your boat, baby).

But what about the turkey pardoned by the President of the United States each November? If it's not on a plate, where does it go? And which president started this fowl tradition?

Email your answer here, and be sure to give us your name, title, organization and contact info.

In August we asked...

In our last issue we asked about the origin of “the dog days of summer.”

Depending on whether you are Egyptian, Greek or Roman, the dog days may span from July 3 to August 11 or extend to August 24, but the story is that they occur when Sirius, the dog star, rises with the sun. This celestial co-mingling creates heat from the sun and heat from the brightest star of Canis Major, making us pant like dogs and, according to the Ancients, go mad!

Our faithful readers knew this and more. Thanks to those who sent in these fun additions . . .

"Dog Days were popularly believed to be an evil time 'when the seas boiled, wine turned sour, dogs grew mad, and all creatures became languid, causing to man burning fevers, hysterics, and phrensies' according to Brady’s Clavis Calendarium, 1813."

"My idea is when it is soooooo hot outside that my dog comes in "stinkin like a dog" and I know she needs a bath!"

And our personal favorite . . .

"Hope you’re enjoying the dog days of summer as much as I am. This is so much better than snow!"

Unfortunately, we saw our first snow last week. So no matter when the dog days begin we can pretty much assure you that they are long since over. Bye-bye, Sirius. Come back again!
