Meet the Quints: Infant Simulators and Models that are Memorable

In a recent webinar, Realityworks Marketing Communications Manager Samantha Forehand teamed up with Account Manager Anne Bogstad to talk about creating memorable learning experiences for today’s students with five of our most popular infant simulators and models. Known as “The Quints,” these unique learning aids include our Shaken Baby, Drug-Affected Baby, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Baby, Preemie Baby, and Down Syndrome Baby. They provide comprehensive learning opportunities on a variety of important topics, like the damaging effects of shaking a baby and alcohol and drug consumption during pregnancy.

What is included with The Quints package?

The Quints package conveniently bundles Realityworks’  Shaken Baby, Drug-Affected Baby, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Baby, Preemie Baby and Down Syndrome Baby and case. These five impactful infant simulators are grouped together to bring a thorough infant care simulation into your classroom. Whether you teach child care career skills or address health and social service topics, these simulators help students identify various situations and know how to react.

What curriculum is included?

This package has a combined curriculum of 8 hours. Lesson plans align to many national standards, including the National Standards for Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Common Core and AAFCS Family and Community Services Standards. (Click here for more information on curriculum standards.)

What makes these infant simulators memorable?

Lined-up side-by-side, the simulators allow students to easily see (and in the case of our demonstrators, hear and experience) differences in size, body characteristics and facial features.

  • Preemie Baby: Our Preemie Baby demonstrates a premature baby at 30 weeks. It weighs 3 lbs. and measures 16 inches in length.
  • Down Syndrome Baby: Our Down Syndrome Baby shows common physical features of a baby for with this condition, including a flat facial profile, broad forehead, spots on the eyes, larger torso relative to the length of their arms and legs, poor muscle tone, neck folds and singular palm crease.
  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Baby: This Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Baby features a flat mid face, low ears, wide apart eyes, webbed fingers, low birth weight and tiny limbs.
  • Drug-Affected Baby: Our Drug-Affected Baby depicts common conditions of a baby born addicted to drugs including physical withdraw tremors, inconsolable cry, painful facial expression and clenched hands.
  • Shaken Baby: Intended to bring awareness to the dangers of shaking a baby, this Shaken Baby Simulator shows how little it takes to damage an infant’s brain once shaken. Its clear head allows the students to see the areas of brain affected, including how the back-and-forth motion causes the brain to slam against the skull. Also included is a “Pledge Not to Shake” certificate.
