Wiring Concepts: How to Safely Engage Students in Residential Wiring

If you teach electrical wiring, you know how important it is to ensure safe practice. That’s why Realityworks Product Manager Jamey McIntosh recently hosted a free webinar about using our RealCareer™ Electrical Wiring Kit to safely engage students in residential wiring. Keep reading to learn how you can use this portable kit and curriculum (whether you’re teaching remotely or in person).

What is the Electrical Wiring Kit?

The RealCareer Electrical Wiring Kit is a safe, hands-on learning aid for teaching students how to wire common electrical circuits. It includes a desktop-sized wall panel and a battery-operated assessment kit. It comes with all the other components – wire, outlets, tape – you need to offer hands-on wiring practice in your classroom.

The most exciting part of this tool is that it’s entirely battery-operated. There’s no risk of shock as your students learn these skills.

The assessment kit itself includes a breakout box, light and outlet socket testers, cables and an assessment remote. The assessment remote uses indicator lights to provide immediate feedback. When the remote connects to the wall panel, lights indicate whether the light and outlet socket wiring is correct or incorrect. It also shows the student what they did wrong so they can go back and fix it.

The included curriculum addresses protection and safety and other key concepts. Lessons provide students with the background information they need to prepare for hands-on practice. Detailed slides offer step-by-step instructions, from wiring simple circuits to testing.

Bonus: We’ve made the curriculum from our Electrical Wiring Kit available to everyone during the COVID-19 pandemic. There are dozens of lessons plus presentation slides, information and activities. Goodle Doc-compatible lesson plans are also available. Access the complete curriculum here.

Electric wiring assessment demonstrated

During the webinar, Realityworks Test Engineer Cody Rico demonstrated how students would use this kit to conduct a basic electrical wiring activity. Watch this demonstration starting at 17:50 to see the Electrical Wiring Kit in action:

As you can see from the video, Cody completed a wiring activity. When he finished, Cody was able to tell from the assessment remote that he completed the activity incorrectly – and why.

Tips for remote teaching

As Jamey demonstrated in his webinar, the Electrical Wiring Kit is a great resource for teaching these skills remotely. Instructors can set the tabletop-size kit on a stand or table to conduct a recorded video demonstration. We also suggest sending individual wall panels home with students to practice on their own – safely, without the risk of shocks or electrocution.

If you elect to send the kit home with your students, we recommend having students post videos of their practice sessions to your Google Classroom or LMS system so others can view and discuss.

Remember, we’ve made the curriculum from our Electrical Wiring Kit available to everyone. Access the lessons, presentation slides, information and activities in downloadable or Google Doc format here.
