Preparing the Next Generation of Phlebotomists: Hands-On Training at HOSA with Realityworks

Join our email listEach year, thousands of aspiring healthcare professionals gather at the HOSA International Leadership Conference (ILC) to test their skills, connect with peers, and take the next step toward their careers. For students competing in phlebotomy, the stakes are especially high — precision, technique, and confidence all matter.

This year, those students gained hands-on experience using our Venipuncture Training Arms, bringing real-world practice into both competitive events and interactive workshops.

Supporting Skill Development at a National Level

American Medical Technologists (AMT), sponsor of the HOSA Health Professions Phlebotomy Competitive Event, hosted two “All About Blood” workshops during the conference. These sessions gave students an opportunity to build and refine their venipuncture skills outside of competition settings.

To support both the workshops and the official competitive event, Realityworks provided Venipuncture Training Arms — ensuring students could practice in an environment that mirrors real clinical procedures.

Learning by Doing: A Hands-On Experience

Throughout the conference, hundreds of students engaged directly with Realityworks’ training arms — practicing proper technique, improving accuracy, and demonstrating competency in phlebotomy procedures required for certification.

From locating veins to performing successful blood draws, students were able to:

  • Build muscle memory through repeated practice
  • Gain confidence in a safe, controlled environment
  • Demonstrate mastery under competitive conditions

The energy in the room was unmistakable — students fully immersed in hands-on learning, supported by tools designed to simulate real patient experiences.

Designed to Build Confidence and Competency

In both classroom and competition settings, effective training tools must do more than demonstrate — they must replicate real-world conditions.

Realityworks’ Venipuncture Training Arms are designed to:

  • Provide realistic vein palpation and blood draw feedback
  • Support repeated practice without risk to real patients
  • Help students develop both technical skill and confidence

At HOSA ILC, these features enabled students to focus on refining their technique and preparing for certification-level expectations.

Making an Impact at Scale

One of the most powerful takeaways from this year’s conference was the scale of engagement. Hundreds of students interacted with the training arms across workshops and competitive events — each gaining valuable, hands-on experience.

This level of participation underscores an important truth: Students learn best when they can practice skills in a realistic, supportive environment.

Bringing This Experience Back to the Classroom

For educators, the challenge is clear: how do you provide every student with meaningful, hands-on practice that prepares them for real-world healthcare settings?

Experiences like HOSA ILC show what’s possible when students have access to high-quality simulation tools. The same kind of engagement, confidence-building, and skill development can be brought directly into your classroom or lab.

If you’re looking to elevate your phlebotomy or health science program, our Venipuncture Training Arms can help your students build the skills they need to succeed.
