Palpation in dentistry is a critical hands-on skill used during oral health assessments to identify abnormalities, tenderness, and changes in oral structures. Realistic Features for Palpation in Dentistry

The Dental Palpation Simulator features a flexible face and mouth lining, along with a textured tongue that can be extended and twisted to support intraoral examination practice. An anatomically correct jaw and 28 permanent teeth further enhance realism, while adjustable straps allow the simulator to be secured directly to a dental chair. Together, these features create an authentic clinical environment that helps students practice palpation techniques with greater accuracy and confidence.

Jaw Clicks and Grinds

This unique tool allows instructors to simulate a healthy jaw, TMJ on the right or left side, and crepitus on the right or left side—conditions students are likely to encounter during palpation in dentistry. When you simulate TMJ, the jaw makes a clicking or popping sound as it opens. If you simulate crepitus, it makes a grinding noise. This variability helps students learn to recognize abnormal jaw movement and sounds during palpation and assessment.

Simulated Abnormalities

The Dental Palpation Simulator comes with a variety of abnormalities. Some are permanently affixed to the simulator, and others can slide under its “skin” or snap into place via magnets. You can find a complete list of abnormalities below.

  • Soft palate abscess
  • Ulceration of fauces
  • Oral malignancy
  • Salivary stone
  • Gingival ulceration

  • Firm large tumor
  • Polyp

  • Hard palate tumor
  • Facial asymmetry
  • Enlarged lymph node

These abnormalities expose students to a range of conditions they may encounter during real oral health assessments.

Scenario Cards

This simulator goes beyond technical skill practice by including scenario cards designed to build soft skills essential to palpation in dentistry. The cards can be used flexibly for five-minute icebreaker activities, journaling prompts, or pre- and post-assessments, making them easy to incorporate into a variety of classroom settings. The scenarios are organized into three categories—new dental patient, extraoral examination, and intraoral examination—and each one includes multiple points of view and guided questions to encourage critical thinking, communication, and clinical reasoning.

Ready-to-Use Curriculum

To save educators time, the Dental Palpation Simulator includes a ready-to-use, three-lesson curriculum focused on palpation in dentistry. Lessons cover the new dental patient, intraoral soft tissue examinations, and extraoral soft tissue examinations. The complete curriculum takes three to four hours to complete and can be taught in its entirety or broken into specific lessons and activities. The curriculum comes with slide presentations, student activities, and assessment tools to support your lessons.
