Where do I find replacement ears? How many ears are included?
You can purchase replacement ears here. These ears are great for practicing ear tagging as well as hormone injections. There are 10 left ear and 10 right ear tags that are included in the replacement package where tags/injections can be done to each ear.
What additional items are needed to ensure all features of this product are used to their full potential?
Your typical training tools such as needles, syringes, ear tagging tools, ear tags, scalpel, implant tools, etc. will ensure students experience the full simulation experience.
Can I do actual tube feeding?
Yes! Students can feel for the calf’s esophagus and trachea in the neck area for proper tube placement.
How does the jugular vein work?
A manual foot pump and internal liquid system mimics blood flow and heartbeat allowing for vein location and blood draws.
Can the calf be used in multiple positions?
Yes! Both the front and back legs are collapsible allowing for a seated position. Please refer to the quick start guide for directions.
How many times can the tail (blood draw), injection site (injection triangle), jugular vein be poked with a needle?
The self-healing tubing can be used approximately 500 times.

We use this model to teach a variety of things – from haltering to tubing to castrating – for both youth and adults, and it has been a great tool to add to our training supplies. It’s not perfect, nor does it replace the real thing, but it’s a great tool to teach the basics and add a hands-on element to our trainings, where students can demonstrate their understanding of various procedures. It’s nice to be able to practice and demonstrate so many skills and procedures with one model, and it’s fairly portable which makes it convenient. We’ve really enjoyed using it!

It’s easy to use pictures and PowerPoints but having a tangible model has truly made a difference in their level of understanding.

The calf simulator is a great hands-on learning opportunity for students in animal science and vet science classes. Being able to tag, castrate, and tube a calf in practice before doing it in real-life is a nice life skill for our students entering jobs on farms. It could still use a little work on a few parts- tubing placement, steps that are easier to follow for students, and curriculum wise. The version in the images looks different then the version we have so improvements may already be in the works.

Thank you for your honest feedback, Candice. We learned of other opportunities for improvement from educators like you, and as this simulator wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for teacher feedback, we are addressing legs and tubing with our second generation Calf Simulator.
