Interactive Models Help Teach Farm Animal Identification Techniques

Join our email listEar tagging and notching are two important animal identification techniques for agriculture students to learn. The Cow and Pig Ear Simulation offers safe and consistent ear tagging and notching practice as well as the opportunity to address proper ear care. Let’s take a closer look at what this new simulation can do.

100s of Practice Opportunities

The simulation comes with a cow head model, a pig head model, simulated cow ears, and simulated pig ears. With 50 pairs of cow ears that can each be tagged up to six times and 100 pairs of pig ears, students can get all the tagging and notching practice they need to master these animal identification techniques.

All the ears are removable and replaceable with a realistic look and feel. A replacement pack for the ears is available for endless practice opportunities. Tags, tagging tools, and notching tools are not included so you can use your preferred style. The models also feature non-marking, slip-resistant rubber feet to hold them in place while students hone their skills.

Ready-to-Use Curriculum & Presentation Slides

This simulation comes with a two-lesson downloadable curriculum with accompanying presentation slides. The lessons cover farm animal identification with about two hours of content. There are student activities as well as pre- and post-assessments that you can easily implement into your existing lessons.

This curriculum aligns to AFNR content standards and was designed for middle school, high school, and post-secondary students. Its goal is to help students learn how to tag and notch ears as well as why these practices are important. Each lesson clearly outlines the objectives, materials needed, and approximate class time.

Other Bovine & Swine Skill Simulations

If you’re looking for a bovine skills simulation that addresses more than just animal identification, the Bovine Injection Simulator and Calf Simulator can meet those needs. The injection simulator is a one-of-a-kind tool for teaching cattle injection, ear tagging, and growth implant basics. The life-sized Calf Simulator offers hands-on practice addressing a variety of major calf issues, including ear tagging, tube feeding, and tail blood draws.

For more practice with swine skills, the Swine Litter Processing Simulators includes four piglet simulators that offer hands-on practice with ear notching, teeth clipping, castration, and tail docking. The simulators come with all the processing tools and supplies as well as ready-to-use, downloadable curriculum.
